At Eats & Sleeps, we have a bunch of solid recipes for home cooks to enjoy. Sometimes, however, enjoyment comes from being a bit silly. I’ve decided to share a little experience with our readers, doing the most basic thing possible: toasting two slices of white bread.
Making Toast At Home
First off, in my opinion, the best bread for a toaster is basic white bread. Nothing special, normal thickness slices, straight from the supermarket into your toaster.

Toasting white bread is a lovely process that ANYONE can do, and it’s like magic, transforming soft, pale bread into crisp, flavorful toast.
Toasting White Bread Instructions:
- Go to the store and buy a loaf of pre-cut white bread.
- Plug in and turn on your toaster.
- Insert the two slices of white bread (vertically for easy removal)
- Wait for the toaster to do its job and pop the toast out.
- If not at desired level of crispiness, add the slices again for about 30 seconds then stop the toaster and remove.
- Turn the toaster off and plug it out (safety first).
When you insert slices of white bread into a toaster, there’s a lot going on. First, heat transfers from the toaster to the bread, removing moisture and drying the bread’s surface. The Maillard reaction also occurs, where amino acids and sugars in the bread react to the heat the toaster applies, adding flavor and color.

You’ll see the caramelization occur and the bread’s texture change from limp and soft to crispy. It’s beautiful in its simplicity.
Serving Suggestion: You can enjoy white bread toast in many ways, from just adding a bit of butter to something more special, like our easy savory mince recipe.
Watch the video below where we toasted the standard slices of white bread and listen closely to the strange noise.
At this point, it is probably important for me to note that this strange noise is part of a much bigger project. It is the first hint of a novel that Catnip Creatives are working on, and it’s a horror story. That’s all I can share at this time, with a huge announcement coming late in 2025.
